This new column intends to open a little window onto the world around us focusing in particular on the role and status of women in different fields in Italy and the United States. Under our magnifying glass, we will explore topics like the legal framework that regulates women’s rights, gender violence, the representation of gender in the media, women's role in politics, and stories of the extraordinary contributions of some important Italian women who made the world a better place.

Author: Ilenia Ciccotelli

Ilenia is a Political Science student at the University of Florence. She is from Molise, one of the smallest regions of Italy. She enjoys tackling challenges and learning new things, she considers herself  a “cultural omnivore”. She is a bookworm and she loves writing down everything, one of the reasons she joined La Pietra Dialogues as a writing intern.

Ilenia likes traveling around the world, learning new languages, and fitting into different cultures in order to discover new perspectives from which to look at things. She would like to become a university professor of politics, history or sociology.

"With Beatles’ songs in the background, let’s fill the world with random acts of kindness and big smiles!" -

Ilenia

Now as I reach the end of this adventure, I want to thank everyone who contributed to the realization of this project. And thank you to anyone who has spent some of his or her time reading my blog!

It was fulfilling to write about subjects that I really care about. This experience has really tested my skills, forced me to connect what I study at university to current debates and concrete issues, and has given me food for thought about what I want to become in the future.

I will remain committed to gender issues because, in the words of Rita Levi-Montalcini, an Italian Nobel laureate honored for her work in neurobiology in 1986:

"We have arrived at a moment when it is time for women to assume a critical role in managing the planet. The path humanity is on is leading down a blind alley of self-destruction. Women need to make a decisive contribution."
