The EU in Focus Working Group and Trip to Brussels

What is the EU? How does it work? What is its role on the world stage?

The EU has the world’s largest GDP, the world’s third largest population, and is among the highest ranking in the world for health, education and living conditions. The decision by British voters for the UK to leave the EU in a 2016 referendum sent shock waves across Europe, many fearing a domino effect. This was followed by a strong showing by anti-EU candidates Matteo Salvini and Luigi Di Maio in the Spring 2018 Italian elections. The continuing refugee crisis in Europe has also created sharp divisions among EU countries.

Through NYU Florence´s Fall 2018 "EU in Focus Series" students will learn more about what the EU is, how it works, its role as an international actor, and some of the main issues it faces today. Join us to be part of the discussion at this critical moment in Europe’s history.

Students can apply to participate in a working group linked to the series in order to develop a deeper understanding of how EU policy-making works through the study of two specific policy areas: Immigration and the Eurozone. For the working group, the series will culminate in a trip to Brussels to visit the European institutions on the ground and meet with actors and experts.

Working group applicants must attend both introductory meetings on September 10 at 6pm and September 25 at 12pm at Villa Sassetti. Students must also attend at least one of the two policy focus area talks - on Migration or the Eurozone - on October 1 and October 9 and participate in the working group review session and final presentations.

Details will be presented by Professor Nicolo Conti at the Introductory session on September 10.
